12:25 am - Earthquake check in
|
Felt the earthquake, but it wasn't that bad at my house. Rattling, but I don't think anything fell and I haven't seen any cracks. (Was more the rolling-rumbly kind than the hard shaking kind.)

12:19 am - Wyrding Studios
|
So Wyrding studios is one of my favorite jewelry sites. (I have a number of other favorites, but I'm focusing on Wyrding Studios today because it's their anniversary and they're having a drawing.)
In particularly, she wanted us to talk about one particular piece we really like.
So I chose this one. I keep going back and looking at it. At the shimmer in the central stone and the little faceted purple beads around the edge. And I'm not going to buy it. (I have enough other necklaces in that color palette and I don't really have the money for it and I don't /neeeeed/ it.) But, oh, is it pretty and I do keep going and looking at it and then talking myself out of buying it. I mean look at that rainbow shine across the face of the labradorite.
Anyway, I've loved all the necklaces I've gotten from her. Highly recommended.

Soooo, normally, I mean to post and don't get around to it, but I read or skim everything on my friends list every day. Though sometimes I open things and go 'I will read this later' and that later may take a while.
And then I started getting behind. I don't even remember why. And while I have, actually, done the catch-up read/skim thing, I now have LOTS of open 'I'll really read that later' tabs and a number of posts that I normally would have read, but triage said no, not today.
But now I face a dilemna - do I post comments on week old posts... or occasionally older posts that have been sitting open waiting for me to read them?
Anyway - if you still want my comments to things now out of date, let me know. Or if there's something particular you want to make sure I saw or whatever.

1:01 am - Soon... I will be on a boat...
|
So, I'm leaving very early tomorrow to go hang out on a boat for three days over by Catalina. I will have no internet. I might or might not have cel service; it's apparently somewhat spotty.
Don't burn down the internet while I'm away. I'll be missing it enough as it is. Also, don't expect responses from me until at least friday and more likely saturday.

6:34 pm - Oooh! Pretty Shinies!
|
The new Chimera Fancies preview post is up here. I can't wait to see all the rest, They're pretty and awesome. And I've been told that I'm not allowed to try to buy them all, so other people should go look.
(Note: this is not the sale, yet, but it will give you an idea of what's going to be in the sale. And I already see several I would love to have, so you may as well. They do also make good presents or just pretty decorations. I know several writers who don't wear theirs, just hang them by their writing desks as a kind of token.)
I will also say that I really like the new metal hoops on the back for the ribbons and the new style she has with the resin over the words inside the metal. I think both dress the necklaces up a little.

12:42 pm - Current LJ stupidity
|
I'm not going anywhere, though I do have an account over on Dreamwidth with the same handle if anyone wants to link to me there.
I also currently have 8 invite codes for Dreamwidth available if anyone wants one, just comment and I'll send you one.
As others have said, I will likely not be crossposting anything (if for no other reason than that I don't actually want my facebook account linked back to my LJ; I have a lot of people there whom I don't particularly want here.) I will definitely not be crossposting comments from other people's locked posts. Please do me the courtesy of not crossposting comments from my locked posts without asking first.

So, obviously the results are highly variable by day, and thus why I'm not really posting them, but a group in England has a social contact survey up to help them figure out how disease would spread. I figured some of my virology obsessed friends might want to know, if only to go look at the results.

9:59 am - Don't panic.
|
This is blackdjinn posting.
Last night Tibicina was having difficulty breathing and showing other signs of respiratory distress. I took her to the hospital where she was admitted with pneumonia. She's feeling better already and they are treating her with antibiotics.
She's asked me to handle communication for her, so I'll keep an eye on comments posted here until she's back on the 'Net. For now... having been up all night, I'm taking a nap.

I'll try to do an update soonish.
In the meantime, halloween-related stuff:
1) Until tomorrow early evening, Chimera Fancies is selling halloween-themed pendants. I love my necklaces from her (though I think I'm sitting on my hands for this sale as I have a lot of them.) I know several of you out there had commented on the necklaces in the past and that they were nifty. There are some really beautiful ones in there, though they are all halloween-ish kinds of themes. She's doing a slightly different selling model this time where you choose up to five pendants you like and she does a random drawing from the people interested in each pendant.
2) Halloween night itself, at my church, our organist is playing his score for Nosferatu. (He's the person who provided the score for the most recent release of it on DVD. Though some of the sections are improvised and tus may be slightly different from the DVD score.) We'll be projecting the movie on the wall as well. It's free, though we usually take an offering. If anyone is interested and needs directions, let me know.

4:15 pm - Recipes?
|
So, just out of interest -
Anyone out there have yellow squash (I think they're patipans, but we keep letting them get too big so we have to cut the seeds out), zucchini (umm... I think that's courgette to the Brittish people on my friends list), or tomato recipes that you'd like to share? (particularly for the zucchini and squash, we're doing pretty well on tomato recipes, honestly.)
We have a garden. The garden insists on continuing to produce insane numbers of vegetables. We also have a bunch of cucumbers. And, living in southern california, we can probably get any other vegetables the dish would need fairly easily.
Though I like the muffin/cupcake things I made this afternoon using a carrot cake recipe and replacing the carrot with squash and zucchini. (We also determined that latke-like things using squash in place of the potatoes was good.) And I need to make more of the zucchini-cheddar bread with bacon (well, and done in muffin tins, that really does work better than the loaf.)
But really each of those recipes ends up using up one or, at most two (and some of them really only use one if you do a double recipe.) We've got six or seven more squash and four zucchini... and there are more growing out there. Help!

Heading out of town for the weekend to go to a wedding. (Not actual family, but might as well be family. I've known the groom sincehe was born and could probably supply a number of embarassing stories.) Don't know what net access will be like there. Just a notice that I likely won't be around.

8:43 pm - Petition: Secretary of the Arts

Quincy Jones has started a petition to ask the President to add a Secretary of the Arts. Other countries often have a Minister of Art and Culture, and we should have something equivalent.
If you are interested in signing, or just in getting more information go here.

Okay, I realize that many of you are still Christmas shopping, and this won't actually be out by then. But you could give someone a card saying it's coming or buy it for someone for Valentine's Day, as it should be out by then. (It may say something odd about me that I can actually see this being a completely reasonable Valentine's Day present for anyone I'm dating. Hrmm...)
Red Roses and Dead Things
There are 88 pre-order slots left. (And if you want to sponsor the album by giving extra money, this weekend is the deadline for that.)
I know pretty much everyone involved in this album, and it should be a lot of fun for any mad scientists or horror-movie buffs on your list.

1:08 pm - California - we have a lot of people. Also, a lot of not-yet processed ballots
|
Fun facts for the day - did you know that there are at least 500,000 not-yet-process ballots in California? (And that's with only about 1/5 of the counties reporting in how many unprocessed ballots they have. Notably, one of the counties which hasn't reported in is L.A. If the ratios going in several of the other large counties hold up, that means there's at /least/ a million ballots left unprocessed, and likely more like 1.5 - 2 million total.) These ballots are mail-in ballots which arrived tuesday or were delivered to polling places on tuesday, provisional ballots, and 'other' (ballots which were damaged, had some sort of mechanical problem or error, or were diverted by the optical scanners as needing further study.)
There are several ballot propositions in California (Notably 1A, 8 and 11) which are currently winning by less than 500,00 votes. (4 is losing by less than 500,000.) (For the record, I am for 1A, though I recognize that it's partially selfish. I'm against the other three of those propositions.)
Look HERE for the current stats on how many ballots remain to be processed by county. (Note: if the line is blank, then than county has not yet reported in how many ballots remain.)
Honestly, I'd had no idea that there were that many outstanding ballots. I don't actually think that the ratio will be skewed enough in the remaining ballots to change the results with 8, at least not by enough, but it is mathematically possible. (11 is currently a lot closer, but not so much something that anyone outside California is likely to care about.)
I do understand wanting to give people an answer about what passed and what didn't pass, but it does seem like there should be more commentary on final totals not being in, particularly for propositions for which the number of outstanding ballots is greater than the margin by which they are winning.
This message brought to you by my idly wondering how many ballots were left to process and if it was enough that 11 wasn't a sure thing. And then I realized what the numbers were looking like. Seriously, there are several counties where 20% or more of the ballots haven't been counted yet.
Edited to unlock because someone asked. Also to note that as of Friday evening, the total unprocessed votes for California are about 2.74 million (but several of the large counties don't yet actually know how many ballots fall into the 'other' category, so that may add some.)

1:46 pm - PSA - Red Roses and Dead Things Pre-Order
|
For those of you who like Seanan McGuire's music, but don't follow her journal every day. Red Roses and Dead Things is now available for pre-order. This is her album of all mad science and horror all the time. (Well, okay, and some real science, in that I believe The Black Death is on there, too.) For that matter this also goes in case there's anyone on my list who is unfamiliar with her music and a big fan of mad science or horror.
More details in her post. I just wanted to point it out for those who might have missed it.

12:28 pm - Supreme Court Meme
|
To help those Americans out there (*cough* Sarah Palin *cough*) who can only name Roe v. Wade when asked for important Supreme Court decisions, if you are so inclined, post about another important Supreme Court Decision in your journal.
Now... almost everyone is posting about important decisions with which they agree, or at least partially agree. I'm actually going to post one of the ones with which I strongly disagree.
Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U.S. 537 (1896) - This is the decision which made 'Separate, but Equal' a point of law for a little more than half a century (Until Brown v. The Board of Education, but that would be a different post.) It upheld the constitutionality of segregation in public accomodations, particularly in railways. Even to the point of having state laws which enforced segregation "as long as the accomodations were of equal quality."
One of the important things to remember about the Supreme Court if you live in the United States, and in some ways even if you don't, is that they have not just the power to make things right; they have the power to set into law (until it can be overturned) decisions which can seriously impact all of our lives in negative ways.
